Gas & heating · Barnsley, South Yorkshire

A one-man gas engineer, set like a poster

One engineer, every visit. The design is as blunt as the proposition.

The brief

What the site had to do.

A sole trader cannot compete with a national on coverage, so the pitch is the opposite: the same person every time, who answers his own phone. The design had to be loud enough to be remembered after one visit and simple enough that one person can keep it current.

01 / THE HERO

An isometric of the kit, no building at all

The only hero with no house in it. Boiler, flow, return and two radiators drawn in isometric with heavy outlines and hard offset shadows, the flow and return animating round the circuit. It reads as a poster rather than a diagram, which is the point.
02 / MOTION

Nothing eases

Every other site in the set uses a soft cubic-bezier. This one moves on `steps(4, end)` — things arrive in four hard jumps with no smoothing. It is a small decision that makes the whole site feel different to scroll, without changing a single colour.
03 / STRUCTURE

Areas first, before a word of copy

The running order opens with a full-width marquee of the towns he covers, before any sales copy. For a sole trader the first question is always "do you come out to me", so the page answers it first.

How it was built

The same standard on every one.

Under 100KBthe whole page, over the wire
3 requestsand no images at all on first paint
3–5 daysfrom first call to a link you can open
4.5:1contrast minimum, checked on phone and desktop

Every page is checked for colour contrast, tap-target size, form labelling, heading order and horizontal scrolling at desktop and at 390px before it goes out. The animations stop for anyone whose device asks for reduced motion. More on what we do for trades in Sheffield.
